ABOUT THE SHOW

When Sonia learns of her son’s decision to leave college, enlist in the military and fight against terror in Afghanistan in the weeks following 9/11, memories of her own childhood overwhelm her. She struggles to reconcile being forced as a young girl to leave Cuba at the dawn of Fidel Castro’s rule with her own responsibilities as a mother facing uncertainty. Sonia must find a way to come to terms with her past, her lost parents, her own children and her adopted country—or risk losing everything that she loves. Set between post-revolutionary Cuba and post-9/11 America, SONIA FLEW telescopes the large cultural and political forces of a historic moment to examine their impact on the intimate lives of ordinary men and women. What do we owe our parents? Can we forgive the past? This poetic and urgent play bridges time and culture in a drama about the cost of forgiveness.

*Please Note: This play contains adult language and situations. Parental discretion is advised.*

  • Monologue: Please prepare a monologue to share with us during your audition. Memorization is welcome, but not required. You may also be asked to read sides.

  • A note on dialect: As Melinda Lopez writes, “Please assume that the characters are speaking their native tongue, and through the magic of theatre we can understand them. Therefore – no accents.” To clarify, all actors are welcome to audition regardless of whether or not you have an accent in English. Actors do not need to add accents to how they typically speak.

  • A note on doubling: Some characters will likely be doubled in this show (see those marked with *). This will likely result in a cast of 8-10 rather than 12 actors.

  • A note on age, race, gender: Actors will be evaluated given an expansive view of their characters' identities –if you are on the fence, go for it. You don’t need to have the exact age, race, and gender identity of your character. Sonia Flew’s playwright Melinda Lopez is Latina, Cuban American–we’d love to celebrate Latin collaborators in this production. Likewise, the play touches on Jewish culture and immigration, and we’d love to celebrate with collaborators who resonate with those themes. Finally, we are a community theatre and want everyone to come and audition, especially those who may be underrepresented in theatre like elders, young people, people of color, non-binary folks, ESL. Come one, come all!
