What excites you about directing this show?
This piece is near and dear to my heart. I played Sonia in college and when I moved to Boston, shortly thereafter, I got to meet Melinda Lopez and see some of her other work. The way she explores historical moments and specific cultures in the piece is very relatable. I remember hearing about 9/11 in my 5th grade classroom, watching my friends balance Christmas and Hanukkah celebrations, and going through those teenage years when it seems everything is your parents' fault. Having studied Spanish my whole life and been invested in politics, I like how Melinda Lopez takes us to Cuba through each character's eyes. These complex humans are made to wonder about the little things in their lives by the big things going on in their countries. Ultimately, they are bound by their family ties as much as by the current events that shape their perspective. When watching this play, we get to examine our own connections and common experiences across borders and through generations.
